Behind the wheel
The Megane on Budva rental rosters is still the outgoing fourth-generation C-segment hatch, not the narrow E-Tech electric crossover that replaced it on European private order books. In Montenegro the 1.5 Blue dCi 115 diesel is the spec to ask for; the cheaper 1.3 TCe petrol works for the Riviera coast run but punishes itself on any sustained climb. Both come with a six-speed manual that is long-geared and relaxed, and the suspension tune is softer than most rivals. The Megane absorbs patched tarmac better than a 308 and runs noticeably more compliantly than the tauter German mid-size alternatives. On a fortnight in Budva that combination reads well.
On Budva roads
The daily Budva roster rewards Megane compliance. The M2 down to Petrovac is a 6th-gear flat cruise at 1,500 rpm, returning close to the WLTP 4.3 L/100 km figure. For day-trips up to Cetinje the diesel torque is the point: you pull from 1,700 rpm on the 8 % gradient without dropping past third, and the 25 hairpins of the Lovćen approach are dispatched without needing constant gear changes. The 90-minute run to Dubrovnik via Debeli Brijeg sits in the Megane's comfort zone, as does the 70 km push down the coast to Ulcinj and Velika Plaža. It is the wrong car for urgency on the Sozina climb but the right one for an unhurried four-up cruise.
Space and load
At 434 litres the Megane has the largest boot of any hatch on this Budva roster, and the square shape is genuinely useful. Six hard cases fit for a family of four heading to the Tivat Airport drop; a full set of beach gear, parasol, two folding chairs, a 40-litre cool-bag, four pairs of snorkel fins, fits alongside the weekly Voli grocery shop. For multi-week renters the Megane is the car that does not force you to leave items behind when an unexpected errand surfaces. Fold the rear bench and a SUP, two bikes with front wheels off, or a tent-and-camping setup for a Biogradska weekend all travel without fuss.

Best journeys for this car
The Megane's best-fit Budva renter is the long-stay visitor expecting to cover real distance during the hire. Two weeks based in Bečići with a four-day Balkans loop built into the middle, Budva to Trebinje to Mostar to Sarajevo and back via Dubrovnik, is the typical brief. It also works for a family of four choosing between a Budva apartment and a Sveti Stefan villa who land at Tivat and need one car that handles both coastal runs and interior excursions without a luggage juggle. Retirees on a month-long stay rate it for the soft ride and the conventional central touchscreen.
Practical notes
Diesel economy hovers at 4.5 L/100 km in mixed use, and the 50-litre tank pushes past 1,100 km between fills, more than any single Riviera day will ever ask. The 4.36 m length is workable at TQ Plaza underground and easy at the Slovenska summer pay bays at €2/h; for the weekly Voli run on the Budva-Tivat road the extra space over a hatch makes the trolley load a one-visit job. Front-wheel drive on all-season rubber is fine year-round on the coast, though a set of winter chains in the boot is worth requesting if your itinerary includes Žabljak or Lovćen between November and March.
The verdict
Pick the Megane when the brief is a long Budva base plus serious distance legs and you want the largest boot without stepping up to an estate. Skip it if your Riviera week is mostly coast-contained between Jaz and Petrovac, or you specifically want the firmer character of a Golf or 308.
